Catherine Cohen Is Comedy’s Biggest Coffee Ally

Coffee has been the butt of the joke in sitcoms, movies, and comedy clubs for decades. Riffs on the extravagance of lattes, hyperbolic caffeine bits, poorly researched jabs at non-existent or otherwise impossible drinks (you can’t make an extra hot Americano, Janeane Garofalo, you just can’t, it’s as hot as it’s ever going to be), broad stereotypes about baristas, the list goes on and on.

At last, there is a comic willing to embrace coffee as a source of some more divine truth. Catherine Cohen crushes these comedian tropes one kindness about cold brew at a time.

Cohen is an award-winning multi-dimensional actor, comedian, poet, and dancer—her coffee-forward presence is found in smash hits like High Maintenance, Broad City, Search Party, and What We Do in the Shadows. Cohen hosts a regular (and spectacular) comedy variety show in New York City at Club Cumming called Cabernet Cabaret and joins fellow New York City-based comedian Pat Reegs in a regular podcast Seek Treatment and, you guessed it, coffee might as well be the third podcast host.

In Cohen’s 2021 poetry collection God I Feel Modern Tonight: Poems from a Gal About Town (Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group), Cat Cohen lays the foundation for feel-good and relatable coffee humor. “I think me ordering a coffee ‘to stay’ at a café could be the entire plot of a romcom,” Cohen muses.

Long-time fans of Catherine Cohen’s coffee humor weren’t let down when Netflix dropped the trailer for Cohen’s one-hour comedy special The Twist? She’s Gorgeous. The special is a culmination of poetry, songs, and comedy Cohen has developed over years of performing live. The twist? There is coffee humor throughout it.

Check out Seek Treatment wherever podcasts are found, God I Feel Modern Tonight wherever poetry collections are sold, and her one-hour special now streaming on Netflix. Better yet, get yourself to Club Cumming and see Cohen in person. The twist? She’s caffeinated.
