Cydni Patterson Interviews Sierra Yeo On The Cascara Podcast

Are you caught up on Cascara from the Sprudge Podcast Network? In each episode, host Cydni Patterson talks to coffee professionals about their livelihood and the communities they impact. In the latest episode, Cydni Patterson interviews coffee writer and founder of The Kore Directive, Sierra Yeo.

Patterson and Yeo talk about the Kore Directive, the Singapore coffee community, and so much more. “Since last year, I got so much more comfortable with discussing the uncomfortable with people,” Yeo tells Patterson. “I’m always the girl with anti-racism in her bio and talking about it all the time. Since being back to Singapore, as you’ve mentioned, I think I’ve come to terms with that aspect of my history now and my identity.”

Yeo continues: “A really good friend of mine asked me this question a while back, like several years ago. He is really in tune with this kind of stuff as well. He said to me, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that English is your first language?’ Like, think about it for a sec. Just sit down and think about it. How did that come to be? And I was just like, ‘Whoa.’ That hit deep on a fundamental level. And then, as I started exploring that dynamic so much more, especially in coffee… I wrote a couple of pieces when I was in Singapore about kopi. Kopi, which is our iteration of traditional coffee. And that was founded on colonization as well, all the way down to Southeast Asia, like the Dutch East Indies and all that stuff. It was just genuinely staggering to realize.”
